From Wat To Treehouse

On January 31st we finally made it to the Doi Suthep Wat which is part way up Suthep Mountain. We can see the lights of this temple from our flat so it's nice to finally know what it looks like up close. 'Tis the season I suppose, but this temple was packed full of tourists. I was hoping to get a nice photo of the city from there but the day we went was too hazy. Maybe next time.

On February 1st (The Chinese New Year, Year of the Horse) we went to Ob Khan National Park. Tourists have not discovered this one yet! This park is really beautiful with a hiking trail along a crystal clear river. The current in the river is quite strong. Angela was having fun floating and letting the current take her down stream. Mike and I were up way too late the night before and could have easily stayed at home in bed but Shelley insisted and we were glad we went. It was a great way to spend a holiday. In the photos: Shelley and Oscar, Angela, Clana, Aurelien, EJ and Shelley's baby sister Beth who's visiting from England.

Our latest trip (February 9-11) was to the Rabeang Pasak Treehouse Resort, one hour north of Chiang Mai. As you will see in the pictures, some of the cabins are literally in the trees while others are on the ground. Ours was not the highest one but still a fair climb up. Not sure if it's just a male thing but I always wanted to have a really cool tree fort as a kid and since it never happened, this was my substitute.  The hosts, Mink and Pin, along with Pin's father Lee, were gracious, amiable and helpful. They also served delicious foods and I'm embarrassed to admit that both nights we were there we missed the closing of the bar and they re-opened it for us to have a nightcap. The property has dogs, cats, chickens and pigs wandering about which we thought was fantastic. If you're not an animal lover this might not be the place for you though.  The property has a small stream that runs through it which helps create an atmosphere of serenity. Nearby there are waterfalls and caves to be explored which you can either walk or bicycle to, using the free bikes provided by the owners. The surrounding countryside is a beautiful display of mountains, trees and water.
Until next time ......
